Chapter 5

You disappear.

The words echoed through her mind, again and again. Her mother would succeed. All her struggles. All her scheming, they were all useless. Catherine de Burgh would triumph. Anne did not even think about the fact that by her very thoughts she was giving credence to what she had declared to be nonsense moments before.

Unless . . .

She straightened in her seat. Henry knew that something was wrong. She had confided in him. Maybe her disappearance was not a sign that her mother had succeeded, but that she had.

“My mother has been attempting to poison me,” she blurted out, flinching at the exclamations that followed. “It is true! William, after you wed Elizabeth, she attempted to force Richard to marry me. But he met Miss James and would have none of it. After he disappeared, she lost all interest in me. A short while ago, she started insisting I drink a tonic every day. When I started feeling ill, I grew suspicious and started dumping it out my window. She never thought I would be disobedient, so she never bothered to watch. The plants I dumped it on all died. I was planning on disappearing with my maid after I left here. Henry was going to help me.”

William exploded to his feet, his face angrier than she could ever recall seeing it. His face grew dark, and a muscle began to vibrate in his cheek. She sat back, amazed at the display of emotion. Then, she looked around her. All the men in the room were reacting to her statements with anger. Even Mr. James, who had only just met her.

She was moved. Their anger showed her more care and concern than she had known her entire life. Anne allowed herself the pleasure of the thought for just a moment, then moved in to diffuse the tense aura that now pervaded the room.

“Henry, William. Please, think. Is it not possible that my disappearance is due to my success? My intent, after all, was to disappear. So, it seems to me, I must have succeeded.”

Both her cousins looked to Mr. James. So did she. His reaction was not the one she wanted. The concern on his face had not lessened. In fact, the sorrow in his eyes deepened. She instinctively braced herself for his words, knowing that she was not going to like them.
